The Daytona 500 is regarded as the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, carrying by far the largest purse. Championship points awarded are equal to that of any other Sprint Cup race.
The world competition Sunday’s 53rd running of the Daytona 500 held recently came with the result of Trevor Bayne as the winner. He had successfully educed David Pearson’s trick on No. 21 Ford. Bayne made it to passed the Daytona International Speedway’s finish line. That was his second crossing the line attempt. If the race happens to be under caution at lap 100 (250 miles), the “Daytona 500 Mid-Race Leader Award” will not be automatically awarded. The award will be rolled over and paid to the driver leading the race at the completion of the fifth consecutive green flag lap following the caution.
Daytona president Joie Chitwood believes the bonus is incentive for drivers to race up front and not lay back in the Feb. 26 season-opening race.
